The essential natural ingredients to soothe sunburn

A sunburn is a skin burn caused by UV rays following exposure that is too long, too strong, or without sun protection. 

It leads to redness of the skin, burning sensation, and sometimes even itching and flaking. 

Indeed, if your skin is not hydrated abundantly after a sunburn, you risk peeling! Fortunately, nature is well done and there are many natural solutions to soothe your sunburn and allow your skin to regenerate. 

The recipes that will follow are made up of 100% natural and ecological ingredients, but you can also use only one of them for a cutaneous application:

  • Aloe vera gel – healing and softening, it relieves burns thanks to its strong moisturizing power and its freshness while participating in the renewal of skin cells;
  • Coconut oil – softening and moisturizing, it deeply nourishes the skin to participate in its repair;
  • Cucumber – cool and waterlogged, cucumber is an excellent moisturizer;
  • Vinegar – white or cider, it relieves pain and tingling thanks to its acetic acid content and restores the pH of the skin for an immediate feeling of freshness;
  • Baking soda – alkaline, it also rebalances the pH of the skin and relieves it in addition to being antiseptic;
  • True lavender essential oil – soothing, anti-inflammatory, and healing, it promotes cell renewal;
  • Avocado oil – particularly rich, it calms irritations and promotes healing of the skin;
  • St. John’s wort – healing and anti-inflammatory, this plant repairs skin lesions and soothes burns and sunburn;
  • Honey – ancestral healing agent, honey stimulates tissue regeneration and is an excellent antiseptic;
  • Shea butter – calming and disinfectant, shea butter helps heal the skin;
  • Calendula oil – soothing and healing, it helps the skin to heal, in particular thanks to its content of vitamin and provitamin A (beta-carotene).

6 natural recipes to soothe sunburn

Recipe n°1: A refreshing lavender oil

In a roll-on bottle, combine the following ingredients:

  • 5 ml oily macerate oil of St. John’s wort;
  • 5 drops of true lavender essential oil.

Place the container in the fridge for a cool, soothing oil.

Recipe n°2: An oil that boosts hydration

In a blender, place the following ingredients before mixing them:

  • ½ cucumber, preferably organic;
  • 60 ml of pure aloe vera gel, preferably organic;
  • 1 ml of vitamin E (available in pharmacies); 3 to 4 drops of true lavender essential oil;
  • 120 ml melted coconut oil;
  • 120 ml of sweet almond oil.

Then place the mixture in a glass jar with a lid and store it in the refrigerator for maximum freshness.

Recipe n°3: An after-sun balm with shea

For this recipe, melt 40 g of shea butter and 55 g of coconut oil in a bain-marie. Place the mixture in a cold bowl in the freezer for a few minutes. 

Once the mixture has cooled and thickened, whisk vigorously until you get an airy and fluffy texture. Then place the balm in a glass jar with a lid. You can also add a preservative (Cosgard or vitamin E) to enjoy it longer!

Recipe n°4: A soothing face mask

If you have sunburned your face, this homemade moisturizing and soothing mask is for you! In a bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of honey (preferably organic) and 1 tablespoon of pure aloe vera gel. 

Apply the mask to the face using a brush or by hand, taking care to avoid the fragile area around the eye. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with clear water.

Recipe n°5: Aloe vera ice cubes

The feeling of freshness when you have just spent hours under a blazing sun is a real pleasure. In addition, it will stop the burning of your sunburn! To benefit from all the benefits of an after-sun care, it is also advisable to place it in the refrigerator… 

Here, we will explain how to make small moisturizing and soothing ice cubes to apply in case of sunburn. In a clean ice cube tray, pour pure, organic aloe vera gel. Add 2 drops of true lavender essential oil to each box and freeze. All you have to do is pass them gently over your burns to soothe them immediately.

Recipe n°6: An anti-burn mixture for the bath

If you have a bathtub, you will be able to take advantage of a good soothing bath to take care of your reddened skin in the sun… In a pot, place the following ingredients:

  • 90 g oat flakes, preferably organic;
  • 115 g baking soda.

Mix well and keep the jar near the tub. For a soothing bath, drop 4 tablespoons of the mixture into the bath water. You can also add a little apple cider vinegar to your bath water (about 100ml)!
