One hair trend that has been gaining traction lately is copper-colored hair, and it has been taking over our social media feeds. Model Molly McCarther’s TikTok video alone has amassed almost a million views. It seems like everyone is eager for a fiery Copper Hair transformation.

Phoebe Dynevor, Ciara, and Gigi Hadid are among the many stars who have donned the sunny auburn shade. To achieve this look, we consulted expert colorists for their tips and tricks.

The Experts

  • Jeremy Tardo is a hair colorist who works on both coasts and has a roster of clients that includes Miley Cyrus, Jared Leto, and Miranda Kerr.
  • Clariss Rubenstein is a hairstylist for celebrities such as Kaley Cuoco, Gemma Chan, and Alison Brie.

According to Tardo, “Auburn hair is a big trend at the moment. I believe that people are looking for the perfect hairstyle to show off after the pandemic, and summertime is the ideal period to experiment with the warm and radiant tones of your hair.”

Although her hair color is toned down slightly from her character in the series, it still highlights the beauty and appeal of the copper hue, which has become increasingly popular.

Jessica Chastain’s copper hair color complements her skin tone and eyes flawlessly. He recommends the Clairol Natural Instincts 6R Spiced Tea Light Auburn ($14) due to its gentle and hydrating formula, which is free of ammonia.

To be on the safe side, Tardo suggests purchasing two boxes of hair color. Additionally, he recommends conducting an allergy test by applying a small amount of the product on the inside of your elbow to ensure that you don’t have an adverse reaction to the formula.

Kate Bosworth opted for a stunning, shimmery copper hue, departing from her natural blonde hair color. To maintain the brightness of your copper hair, Tardo recommends using a color-protecting shampoo, such as Davines Nou Nou ($34). He adds, “This will assist in prolonging the life of your auburn locks.”

SZA’s curly hairstyle is beautifully complemented by the warm copper hue. This particular terra cotta shade of copper is an excellent choice for individuals with darker skin tones. Rubenstein advises those who are hesitant about coloring their hair at home to seek the assistance of a professional for the best possible results. She cautions that lightening hair at home can be damaging and expensive to reverse.

However, if you decide to go the DIY route, she recommends trying a demi-permanent color that is only a shade or two darker than your natural hair color. “It’s the absolute best way to do it at home,” she advises.

Emma Roberts, like her aunt Julia Roberts, has a natural hair color of light brown, but this copper shade provides an effortless transition for a pop of color.

Q: Which skin tones are best suited for copper hair?

A: Copper hair comes in a variety of tones, ranging from strawberry blonde to auburn to brighter shades, making it suitable for a wide range of skin tones. Typically, individuals with fair skin should consider trying out strawberry blonde or bright copper shades, whereas those with darker skin tones may opt for sienna or terra cotta hues.

Q: How long does copper hair last?

A: Copper hair can last up to six to eight weeks with proper care and maintenance. To extend the life of your color, use color-protecting products and avoid excessive heat styling.

Q: Is it necessary to bleach hair before dyeing it copper?

A: It depends on your natural hair color and the desired shade of copper. If you have dark hair, you may need to bleach it to achieve a brighter, more vibrant copper color. However, those with lighter hair may be able to achieve a copper shade without bleaching. It’s best to consult with a professional colorist to determine the best approach for your hair.
